Darius Timothy Gatling Killed in Newport News Convenience Store Shooting. (

Did negligent security contribute to this shooting death and are justice and substantial compensation available to the victim’s family?

Gunfire erupted Sunday morning, May 26, 2019 at a Newport News, Virginia convenience store leaving one man dead.

According to, “dispatchers received a call about the shooting just before 5 a.m.” is reporting, “Darius Timothy Gatling, of the 600 block of Bellwood Road, was found shot at the Wawa gas station located in the 14800 block of Warwick Boulevard.”  Mr. Gatling died on the scene according to the media outlets.

No arrests have been announced.

Convenience store and gas station patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided at the convenience store and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property?
  • Was there any suspicious activity reported prior to the shooting?
  • What security measures, such as bright lighting, monitored surveillance cameras, clear windows, and visible security personnel, were in place to deter crime and protect Darius Gatling at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the convenience store owner failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, Darius Gatling’s family may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for their loss.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that Darius Gatling’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
