Did a fatal security lapse contribute to the tragic loss of these young men?

Local News

A shooting at The Black Pearl nightclub reportedly claimed the lives of 26-year-old Torance Lamar Peoples and 23-year-old Trevonne Judge Wednesday, December 20, 2017.

According to WLTX 19, an “argument between two groups” at the “Black Pearl” nightclub erupted in gunfire shortly after 3:00 a.m. Tragically, both Mr. Peoples and Mr. Judge succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene.

The State reports, police “have responded to the club at least 32 times this year, with calls ranging from larcenies to shootings.”

Our Legal Take

Nightclub patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • Were any attempts made by nightclub management or security to safely and separately remove all those involved in the initial altercation from the premises prior to an escalation to gunfire?
  • What security measures, such as weapons screenings, surveillance cameras and security patrols, were in place at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the nightclub owner failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the families of Torance Peoples and Trevonne Judge may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for their wrongful deaths.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victims’ families retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
