Did negligent security contribute to the tragic death of this young man?

Local News

Family and friends are searching for answers after a Portland apartment shooting claimed the life of 18-year-old Kentraveon “Tre” Hill and left a 17-year-old in critical condition.

According to KATU 2, gunfire erupted at the “Hazelwood Station Apartments off E Burnside on NE 147th Avenue,” around 10:45 p.m. Tragically, Mr. Hill succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene. A second teenage victim was transported to the hospital in “critical condition.” Police are apparently still searching for suspects and a motive. Family members urged the gunman and witnesses to come forward during a candlelight vigil Thursday evening, per FOX 12 reports.

The complex was apparently the subject of a prior shooting investigation in April 2008. At that time, police told East PDX News they were seeing “more serious and deadly crime along the outer east side MAX corridor.” Sadly, it appears the violence has continued.

Did negligent security contribute to this senseless loss of life? We represent individuals and families who have suffered a tragic loss or injury as a consequence of negligent property security. Read Our Legal Take below to find out if the victim’s family may have a legal avenue for justice and claims for substantial compensation in Oregon, or call now for a free consultation with our legal team: 888.842.1616.

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • Were any additional security measures, such as gated-entry, surveillance cameras, bright lighting, and security patrols, implemented by the apartment complex owner following media reports of prior crime on property?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner and management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the family of Kentraveon Hill may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for his wrongful death. Additionally, the other young victim of this shooting may pursue legal claims for his injuries.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victims retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
