Could the tragic death of this West Columbia, South Carolina father have been prevented?

Local News

A shooting outside a West Columbia apartment complex reportedly claimed the life of 38-year-old Edward Walker Friday morning, January 19, 2018.

According to WACH 57, an argument outside a “Platt Springs Road” apartment complex escalated into gunfire between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. Mr. Walker, a father of two, tragically succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene.

Assistant Chief Scott Morrison apparently told WLTX 19 Mr. Walker was outside for “up to two hours before police were called.”

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided on the property and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • Mr. Walker was reportedly outside for up to two hours before police were called to the scene. Where was apartment security, staff and management during this critical time?
  • What parking lot security measures, such as surveillance cameras and security patrols, were in place to protect residents and deter crime at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner and management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the family of Edward Walker may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for his wrongful death.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
