Did a Security Lapse Contribute to The Death of This Young Man?

Local News

A shooting at a Greensboro apartment complex reportedly claimed the life of 17-year-old Rontaveon Montrice Porter and left another teen injured Monday night, March 20, 2017.

According to WFMY News 2, the shooting occurred outside the complex “at 2006 Niagara Street,” shortly after 8:30 p.m.

Mr. Porter and another young victim were apparently “in the parking lot with a group of about two dozen people” when gunfire erupted, per WRAL reports. Both teens were transported to the hospital, where Mr. Porter tragically succumbed to fatal injuries. The condition of the second victim has not been released.

Our Legal Take

Generally, property owners are required to protect all guests legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment owner or management company failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the family of Rontaveon Montrice Porter may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for his wrongful death. Addtionally, the other young victim and his family may elect to pursue legal claims for his injuries.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victim’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
