Could This Tragedy Have Been Prevented?

Local News

A shooting outside The Edge at Noda apartment complex reportedly claimed the lives of 29-year-old Jared Chatman and 30-year-old Sanchez McClure Tuesday night, June 20, 2017.

According to The Charlotte Observer, gunfire erupted “at The Edge at NoDa Apartments at 420 Hilo Drive, off North Tryon Street,” around 11:30 p.m. One victim was  discovered “in the stairwell of the apartments and the second victim was just inside the doorway,” per media reports.  Tragically, both young men succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene.

CMPD has launched an initiative, called “Operation Avalanche,” targeting crime in the area of the shooting, per WBTV News reports.

Our Legal Take

Generally, property owners are required to protect all residents and guests legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner or management failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the families of Jared Chatman and Sanchez McClure may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for their wrongful deaths.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that the victims’ families retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.
